This contemporary extension in Hackney sets pink fair faced concrete against an eclectic mix of interiors, making for a distinctive addition to its conservation area setting. The project preserves the special character of the small Victorian terrace while creating a much needed larger kitchen and living space for the family owners.

The new single-storey extension to the rear maintains the legibility of the existing building and celebrates its original form by mirroring the roofline of the existing closet wing. The plan of the extension also preserves the shape of the original floor plan, separating the closet wing and the main house, while creating extra usable space, and improving the connection between ground floor spaces.

Rich and eclectic interiors contrast with the contemporary detailing of the extension. The living area is designed around a comfy, mid-century style sunken seating area, which provides a space for relaxation and conversation. An internal winter garden between here and the garden merges inside and outside space and enhances air quality within the property.
